Temples of Bagan Rocked by Earthquake

Late afternoon on August 24th in Bagan, Myanmar, just as crowds were gathering to watch the famous sunset over the Bagan plain, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook the area, sending a cloud of dust over the sprawling horizon of 10th to 14th century pagodas and temples.

Reports indicate nearly 100 of the more than 2200 structures were affected, some heavily, and these statements have been confirmed by our local Bagan based guides.  There were no casualties in the immediate Bagan area and we are happy to report our guides and their families are all safe.  The last major quake to affect the Temples of Bagan was in 1975 while Myanmar’s was in 2012.

Just goes to show you that even the world’s ancient wonders are susceptible to nature’s awesome force.  Check out our Sacred Cambodia and Magical Myanmar trip for an opportunity to see the fascinating Temples of Bagan.  The recent “restructuring” will surely add a picturesque dynamic to the already breath-taking plain!
