Life Along The Irrawaddy River of Myanmar

The 1350 mile Irrawaddy River, in modern times occasionally known as “The Road to Mandalay,” has been utilized for trade and transport since the sixth century and remains an important shipping and transport route today.  The Himalayan fed Irrawaddy is heavily relied upon by Burmese living along its fertile banks for agriculture, fishing, and transport although proposed hydroelectric dam construction on tributaries of Myanmar’s largest river pose threats to livelihood, fish spawning, and survival of the Irrawaddy Dolphin and endangered Irrawaddy Shark.

Boat travel on the Irrawaddy is a thoroughly pleasurable and engrossing experience.  It provides not only a different glimpse into local life but is commonly more comfortable and satisfying than road travel.  There is just something romantic about floating along a classic Asian river with a cold drink in hand as life casually passes by.  Fishermen casting nets, motorized canoes heading to the next village, farmers tending their fields, women doing the daily wash, and kids splashing and horsing around without a care in the world.  You will be forgiven for drifting into satiating bliss as you realize how truly unforgettable this experience is, all the while a contented grin spread ear to ear.

Join World Untouched as we travel the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan aboard an exclusive luxury river boat during our Sacred Cambodia and Magical Myanmar adventure to experience this romantic journey first hand.
